Common Causes of Air Conditioner Freezing Up

There are many reasons why your AC unit may be freezing up. AC’s need proper airflow to keep the cold coil warm and a clogged air filter can impede the airflow causing an AC freeze. When your AC unit freezes up, it will quit cooling your home even though the blower continues to run.

As a leading AC products supplier, Bin Dasmal General Trading, a part of Bin Dasmal Group aims to support Oman based customers with high grade HVAC equipment along with general trading services, lifting supplies, access, and storage solution, contracting services and more.

Here are some brief explanations of what causes the AC coil to freeze.

  • Dirty Filter

The indoor coil is called the evaporator coil. When sufficient warm air is not pulled over the coil, it begins to freeze. Another cause for freezing could be when humidity in the air hits the coil, condenses onto the coil and freezes.

  • Too many vents blocked

The ducts in your air conditioner pull in warm, humid air and carry it to the air handler to be cooled and dehumidified. When the vents get blocked not enough air is circulated over the coils and its moisture starts condensing followed by a freeze.

  • Thermostat set too low

Sometimes old air conditioners don't cool well, and the user may tamper with the thermostat. Most air conditioners are capable of cooling to about 62F. Lowering the temperature below that, it may simply get too cold and cause the moisture condensing to freeze.

  •  Improperly Sized Ductwork

Ductwork that is too small for the AC and blower will restrict air from passing through the system to keep the coil from icing. On the other hand, ductwork that is too big doesn't allow air pressure for adequate airflow. This in turn causes an AC freeze.\

  • Bad Blower Fan

If the blower motor is burnt out and makes a squealing sound it could indicate fan damage which restricts proper airflow. Airflow is a major reason for freezing an AC. You may need a technician to pinpoint the issue.

  • Low Refrigerant

Coil icing can also occur with low refrigerant. As the refrigerant level drops and lowers in temperature it causes the coil to get freezing cold. This freeze condensates as it removes moisture from the air.
